Observation of the natural marine fishery, now among the most productive in the world, developing beneath the offshore oil platforms inspired visionaries to use the structure as a base for sea farming.

 

In 1978, Atlantic Richfield Company and California Marine Associates conducted a feasibility study to culture Red Abalone (Haliotis rufescens). John McMullen of AbLab, and Win Swint and Gary Johnson of California Sea Farms innovated sea farming techniques. Our team as The Mussel Company opened the doors to harvesting California Mussel (Mytilus californianus) at Platform Hilda (Decommissioned).
